So, you want to apply to be an elected member of the SCA? Here is some
insider information on how to improve your chances.
First, there are no quotas. Your application will be considered on its
own merits and not relative to other submissions. There will be a jury
of six people who will review each application just after the October 15th
deadline for submissions.
They will assess the CD images from each applicant and evaluate them based on:
- Proficiency in the chosen medium
- Consistency of thought/style in the body of work
- Uniqueness/interest/originality/style
- Has a defined focal point
- Is well structured and has a pleasing composition
- Shows good use of colour and/or form
- Has impact that evokes a reaction in the viewer
The CV will also be reviewed as appropriate for factors including:
- Commitment to the Arts
- Experience at a professional level
- Active in the arts community
- Recognition by peers
Each year there are a number of submissions that leave jurors scratching
their collective heads because they can’t make out the artwork.
Why? The images are poor quality! They are unprofessional. How
can they judge the images if they are so dark that all the art
looks like "Symphony in black". There are also situations
when it is unclear whether that hand is part of the picture
or part of the person holding the canvas as it is being photographed
or whether that tree or garage door to the side is an artistic
statement or a problem with framing the image properly, or did
the artist actually paint on a rhomboid shaped canvas or was
the picture leaning away from the camera lense. Attention should
also be paid to the requested size and pixel resolution specified
on the application form. An application may be rejected if the
images are not of the required resolution and format. These
are some of the factors to consider when making digital images
of your work.
