Marvyne Jenoff, SCA

I create because I have a need to make things, to play with ideas and to engage in my love of light, colour, form and tactile experience. In my art I express whimsy, meditativeness, and beauty. I feel the world needs more of this attitude, and that I help to tilt the balance in a small way through my art.

I am currently working in collage on paper. All the elements are pieces taken from my own work: abandoned watermedia paintings and photographs, sketchbook pages and photocopied sheet music I wrote in my youth. I was inspired by these pieces to make something new out of them. Some of the works make a feature of different kinds of edges: torn, cut, cut (photographs) with white borders of different widths, perforated sketchbook pages.

My art is semi-abstract, arising from a love of light, colour, form and tactile experience. I am drawn to softness, humour, irony, subtlety and beauty. Much of my work is based, formally or informally, on horizontal and vertical lines. We relate naturally to the horizon, and the surfaces we walk on are horizontal; the walls of buildings we live and work in are vertical, based on our standing upright; picture frames are most often rectangular. Against the security and familiarity of these right angles I can be loose and intuitive in my art.

My art education has been largely informal: books, videos, conversations with artists, and courses at the Ontario College of Art, The Sheridan College School of Crafts and Design and The Toronto School of Art.

My work has been included in group shows throughout the Toronto area, including those of the Society of Canadian Artists, Ontario Society of Artists, Arta Gallery, Propeller Gallery, Colour and Form Society (honourable mention, 60th Anniversary Show, 2012),and the Arts & Letters Club of Toronto (finalist, 2015 NEXT Province-Wide Competition).

I have had solo shows at the Skylight Gallery, Northern District Library, Toronto Public Library System, including Paper on Paper (2016), and at the Arts & Letters Club of Toronto, including Moon, Paper, Scissors (2019). I am represented in private collections in Toronto, Thornhill, Winnipeg, Brandon, Vancouver, and Seattle.
