Kelly McDonagh, SCA

I paint the figure not only for the challenge of it’s technical complexity but also the desire to communicate mood.

For me a good figurative painting is one where the figure is loose, the movement is obvious and subtle at the same time, a sense that the scene is just about to change, or may already be changing... there should be a dialogue, a tension about what is going on and why the subject is there. This kind of success in a painting requires more than rendering detail or good colour theory, it requires emotion from the subject to the artist and back to the viewer. The telling and retelling of the story.
